Google ships two different AI answer surfaces, and the tools that monitor them price them differently. AI Overviews comes with almost every entry plan. Google AI Mode is an add-on, an upgrade, or absent, including here.

No, and every tool in this category prices them as two separate things. Google AI Overviews is the generated answer block above the ordinary blue links on a normal results page. Google AI Mode is a distinct conversational surface a searcher switches into, where the result is a full answer with its own retrieval and its own citations. A tool can monitor one and not the other, and most of them do.
The pricing pages make the split explicit.
Otterly.AI includes Google AI Overviews in what it calls "Tracking of 4 AI Search Engines:
ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, MS Copilot" on all three paid tiers, then sells "Google AI-Mode" as an extra add-on at $9 to $149 a month depending on tier.
AthenaHQ lists AI Overviews on its free Essential plan and AI Mode only from Starter at $295/mo.
Profound reaches AI Mode only in its Enterprise list of nine answer engines. Buying "Google tracking" buys the Overviews half by default.
Four of the five tools read for this page cover Google AI Overviews somewhere in their range, and three cover it on the plan you would actually start on.
AthenaHQ's free Essential tier lists AI Overviews with
ChatGPT, Perplexity,
Gemini and Claude. CiteRank's $5 Solo plan tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews across ten buyer questions.
Otterly.AI's $29 Lite plan covers AI Overviews with ChatGPT, Perplexity and MS Copilot across fifteen prompts.
Profound is the exception worth knowing about, because it is the best-funded tool in the category and the one a shortlist usually starts with. Its $99 Starter plan is described on its own pricing page as "
ChatGPT tracking only", no Google surface at any price below Growth at $399/mo, which names ChatGPT, Perplexity and
Google AI Overviews as its three engines.
Ahrefs is a different kind of unknown: Brand Radar sits on Lite at $129/mo with five tracked AI prompts, and its pricing page names no Google surface at all, so the plan cannot be compared on this question from the page that sells it.
Nothing, if the question is asked once. AthenaHQ's Essential tier covers
AI Overviews at no cost, metered by credit, $25 of free credit, 300 credits, and its pricing page defines the unit as "1 credit = 1 AI response". That is enough to learn whether Google's AI names you and not enough to watch it change. For repeating, scheduled monitoring the entry band runs roughly $16 to $29 a month:
Mangools AI Search Watcher from $15.60/mo on annual billing, the vendor's own line was "Subscriptions start at $15.60 per month with annual plans", read on 9 August 2026, then CiteRank's $5 Solo plan for ten questions on three engines, then
Otterly's $29 Lite plan for fifteen prompts on four. Mangools is the least legible of the three by a distance, and that is now the more useful thing to say about it than its price: it is an add-on inside an SEO suite, its per-tier limits render client-side, and on 13 August 2026 its published entry price could not be retrieved from the vendor at all, so what it charges today is not a fact this page can stand behind. CiteRank's $5 and Otterly's $29 are both readable off a vendor page on the day you read this.
Adding Google AI Mode changes those numbers sharply. On
Otterly it is an add-on from $9/mo at the low end. On AthenaHQ it means Starter at $295/mo. On
Profound it means an Enterprise conversation. On CiteRank it is not purchasable at all. A buyer who needs AI Mode specifically is shopping in a different price bracket than one who needs AI Overviews, and the headline monthly price on a comparison table will not show that. The full AEO tool comparison runs the same exercise across the whole category.
Google AI Overviews can be observed from an ordinary search result. Google AI Mode is a separate conversational product, which means a monitoring tool has to drive it as its own session rather than read a block off a page it already fetched. That cost shows up in the pricing as a per-engine add-on rather than a bundled feature, which is why
Otterly bills AI Mode alongside Gemini and
Claude at $9 to $149 a month instead of folding it into the four engines every paid tier already covers.
The practical consequence for a buyer is that "we track Google" is not a specification. Two tools can both say it truthfully while measuring different surfaces at prices an order of magnitude apart. The question to put to a vendor is which of the two, on which tier, and what the other one costs.
Ask the same question three times and the set of cited domains moves. Across three runs of an identical prompt, only about 2.2% of cited domains recur in all three. A one-shot check, the kind every free tool in this category offers, this product's included, reports what one answer looked like once, and nothing about a trend.
That is the argument for a repeating probe rather than an on-demand one. What matters more than frequency is whether a report distinguishes "Google's AI did not mention you" from "the probe never ran", two very different facts that a rate-limited tool will print as the same zero. Every CiteRank report states asked-versus-answered per engine for that reason.
A Google AI monitoring tool that returns one score is hiding the useful distinction. Being cited means the AI Overview linked a page on your domain, and it is the only one of the three states that can send a click. Being named means the answer typed your brand without linking it, which is usually the state that can be fixed. Absent means someone else answered the buyer's question.
Named-but-not-cited is the most common and most actionable of the three, and a single percentage averages it away. The other half of a useful report is the list of domains Google's AI cited instead, that list is a work queue, and what to do with it is here.
If you are comparing against a specific tool, the Profound alternatives and
Peec AI alternatives pages go deeper on each, and the same question for Perplexity is answered separately. Or run one free check, on one real question, and compare the answer against whatever you use now, no account, and a result page you can share.
